  • No proxies are allowed to be used during events/tournaments unless the player can show that they own a physical copy of the card, or unless the event/tournament has been advertised as either casual or a proxy friendly event/tournament.
  • Zero compliance towards The Iron Lion house rules or code of conduct will not be tolerated. We will simply offer 2 warnings and by the 3rd we will ask you to leave.
  • The Iron Lion allows a 15-minute grace period into the start of the first round in any tournament to allow players to be seated. If you have surpassed the 15-minute grace period, your opponent will be awarded the round win.
  • If you are finished with your match; please avoid conversing with other players who are still playing their match to allow the player(s) to fully concentrate on game play. Deck walkthroughs between players are prohibited during tournaments however, a walkthrough after the tournament has concluded is permitted.

Iron Lion’s House Rules Specific to MTG [Commander/EDH & cEDH LEAGUE]:

  • When playing games with more than 2 life totals where placements beyond 1st need to be determined, players that present an indisputable1 win to all other players will be given their appropriate placing and exit[*1] the game.
  • When playing games with more than 2 life totals where placements beyond 1st need to be determined and a time limit is in place for said game, the game will go to “turns”. Depending on the number of remaining players, the process for “turns” is as follows:
    • 2 people: 3 turns where the current turn when time runs out is turn 0
    • 3 people: 5 turns where the current turn when time runs out is turn 0
    • 4 people: 7 turns where the current turn when time runs out is turn 0

*If there are 2 or more players remaining in the game after the allotted turns, then a 20-sided die will be rolled by the players to determine placements. The player who rolls the highest value takes the highest remaining placement until all players have received a placement*

  • Deals/Bargains
    • In sanctioned events, agreements (“deals”) between players are not permitted if said agreement would significantly affect the game state. The Head Judge has final say in regard to what agreements are considered Deals/Bargains..
      • Is OK: John proposes to the table that if someone counters X, then he will counter Y.
      • Is NOT OK: John proposes to Tim that he will not attack Tim if Tim agrees to do X.
  • In accordance with the Official Rules, genuine cards of any language are permitted to be used and played[*2].

cEDH One-Day Tournament Structure:

- Swiss

Swiss Style events are the easiest to comprehend. You play X number of rounds, and cut to Top Y.

Traditional Swiss is a “Seeded” tournament. Winners play winners. The math on 4-way Free For All does not work well for traditional Seeding. As an alternative, I recommend “no-repeat” Swiss. As the name implies, that you do not play against the same opponent more than once. This best enables the randomness of cEDH and tiebreaks to work in your favour.

Standard Swiss breakdown for cEDH
  • 0-16 players - 2 rounds - Top 1

  • 17-32 players - 3 rounds - Top 4

  • 33-64 players - 4 rounds - Top 4

  • 65-128 players - 5 rounds - Top 16

  • 129-256 players - 6 rounds - Top 16

  • 257-512 players - 7 rounds - Top 16

Scoring
  • Win - 3 points

  • Draw - 1 point

  • Loss - 0 points

  • Bye - 3 points

(Tie points are given to all players in the match, both alive and dead)

Tiebreaks
  1. Points

  2. Win Percent (wins/games played)(byes are not considered in this equation)

  3. Opponent Match Win Percentage

Timelimits

60 minutes minimum, 120 minutes maximum. Usually 75 or 90 minutes based on intended tournament length.

End-of-round procedure

When the match goes to time, set the number of turns equal to the number of surviving players. Standard turns policy applies (if a player takes multiple turns, they can take up all remaining turns in the game)

Seating Order

We use random seating at all games. I’ll be the first to admit that alternatives are underexplored. Random is safe, seeded can cause adverse incentives, so be careful with alternate systems.

Prize Structure and Structure for cEDH League:

  • Each League night will have three (3) games with a 1-hour limit per game.
  • Players will receive points based on their placement in each game*. Points are distributed according to the following placements:
  • 1st Place - 5 points
  • 2nd Place - 3 points
  • 3rd - 2 points
  • 4th - 1 point

*If there are only three (3) players in any given game, then points are awarded for first (1st), second (2nd) and third (3rd) with no fourth (4th) place player. The Top four (4) points leaders at the end of the 4-week League play three (3) games to determine the League Champion**

**As not all months have four (4) Tuesdays, the store and players determine a date and time to host the finals that works for all participants.

*1 An indisputable win is considered to be when all of a player’s opponents agree, unequivocally, that the player has presented that they are capable of defeating all players; thus, the opponents allow the player to leave the game and continue to play out the game to determine 2nd, 3rd, etc.

*2 This is true for all events except events where the highest level of Rules Enforcement is in effect as only cards printed in English or a player’s native language are allowed to be used by a player at that level of Rules Enforcement.
